Fortsetzung der erfolgreichen “New York Jazz”-Serie, dem Ostküsten-Gegenstück zu “West Coast Jazz”
Rare und einzigartige Originalalben von u.a. Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Stanley Turrentine, Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Johnny Hodges, Dexter Gordon, Milt Jackson, Jimmy Smith und Gerry Mulligan.
Seit den 40er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts ist New York City
das Zentrum und Mekka des modernen, urbanen Jazz und nie
waren zeitgleich so viele Giganten dieser Musik in ihrer kreativen
Höchstphase am Werk wie Ende der 50er Jahre. Den Auftakt
machen wir mit einigen der besten Swingmusiker aus dem
Ellington-Umfeld, allen voran Trompeter Roy Eldridge und die
Saxophonisten Ben Webster und Johnny Hodges, die als Vorbild
für Leute wie Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Sonny Rollins und
all die anderen Bebop und Hardbop Musiker unbestritten waren.
Zu den Musikern, die die Wurzeln des Jazz ganz bewusst aufgreifen,
gehörte Tenorsaxophonist Stanley Turrentine, der bei Ray Charles
durch die Schule des Rhythm & Blues gegangen war, und hier
gleich großartig in dem modernen Umfeld von Drummer Legende
Max Roach erklingt wie im funky Groove Sound zusammen
mit dem Organisten-Star Jimmy Smith. Dieses Spannungsfeld
vertreten die meisten der hier versammelten Meisterwerke:
Die Saxophonduelle von Sonny Rollins und Sonny Stitt oder
von Johnny Griffin und Eddie „Lockjaw“ Davis. Experimenteller
agiert Rollins dann mit seinem Trio und Orchester, ebenso wie
der große Baritonsaxophonist Gerry Mulligan, der uns mit seiner
Concert Jazz Band bis heute unerreichte Sternstunden bescherte.
Aber auch rare Schätze sind mit dabei: das Trio des viel zu jung
gestorbenen Pianisten Eddie Costa, die kammermusikalischen
Projekte von Hal McKusick und der Jazz Modes um den späteren
Monk-Saxophonisten Charlie Rouse.
