Der Tenorsaxophonist Coleman „The Hawk“ Hawkins (1904-1969) war einer der wichtigsten Instrumentalsolisten des Jazz. Der „Vater des Saxophons“ eroberte dieses bis dahin unbeliebte
Instrument für den Jazz und beeinflusste Generationen nach ihm. Er besaß zudem eine starke Persönlichkeit, enorme Präsenz und eine ausgeprägte musikalische Abenteuerlust, so dass er bis in
die Sechzigerjahre immer stilistisch auf der Höhe der Zeit blieb.
Ab 1924 war er Mitglied des neu gegründeten Fletcher Henderson Orchesters, dem auch Louis Armstrong für ein Jahr angehörte,und das sich bald zum ersten wichtigen großen Jazz Ensemble entwickelte. Von 1934 bis 39 hielt sich Hawkins in Europa auf, wo er große Popularität genoss und viele Platten mit europäischen und amerikanischen Musikern entstanden. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach New York musste er seinen Thron verteidigen: Schüler wie Ben Webster, Chu Berry und Buddy Tate hatten sich während seiner Abwesenheit etablieren können. Aber mit dem phänomenalen Erfolg seiner „Body and Soul“ Einspielung von 1939 und nach einigen Jam Sessions war er wieder der King des Tenorsaxophons.
Schon früh unterstützte er die jungen Bebop-Musiker und förderte sie mit Engagements in seinen Bands, speziell Thelonious Monk.
Lange tourte er mit den Jazz At The Philharmonic Ensembles und spielte viele großartige Platten ein, als sich das LP-Format Mitte der Fünfzigerjahre etablierte.
